UPHA Adopts Resolution on Health Resilience in Utah’s Changing Environment

The Utah Public Health Association (UPHA) adopted a resolution entitled Strengthening Community Resilience to Safeguard Health in Utah’s Changing Environment during its annual conference in March 2026.

UPHA resolutions represent public health issues that the association is committed to addressing and help guide its priorities for advocacy and education. In this resolution, UPHA recognizes the health impacts of Utah’s changing air, water, and temperature and calls for efforts to support a healthy environment and healthy Utah.

UHEART was proud to propose the resolution, with members collaborating over several months to draft and finalize the document. UHEART is excited to see growing recognition of the connection between environmental change and health in Utah and looks forward to working with UPHA and other partners on endeavors related to the resolution.

Herriman High School Students Win National Award

Three students from Herriman High School recently earned first place at DECA's 2026 International Career Development Conference for their project, the AIR Initiative.

The project explored the feasibility of installing solar energy systems and expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure at the Utah State Correctional Facility.

The students’ advisor, Michelle Brown, Coordinator of Resource Stewardship at the Utah Department of Government Operations, said resource stewardship projects have become increasingly common among recent years' DECA interns. For the 2026 winning team, enthusiasm for innovation and a vision of a brighter future for Utah were key motivations behind their proposal. Part of that vision was a desire to improve community health. Through the promotion of solar energy, the interns aimed to reduce air pollution, improve air quality, and contribute to better health outcomes for Utahns.

As part of the competition, the students conducted research, collaborated with state agencies, developed a written proposal, and presented their findings. Brown explained that her office wanted students to gain hands-on experience by working with real data, conducting face-to-face interviews, and building practical relationships with professionals. This approach helps students to develop meaningful skills and contribute to real-world challenges.

The project generated enthusiasm beyond the competition. Utahns shared their excitement on social media, celebrating the students' achievement. "People love to see a positive story, and love to see us utilizing young minds to help create solutions for the state," Brown said.

As the DECA internship program continues, Brown is already preparing for the next group of interns, providing future students with opportunities to develop resource efficiencies, support community health, and gain valuable professional experience.
